I hope I do not ever need to use it. That is no longer a concern. The installation was quick and uneventful.I printed some test pages and then started working it. I don't know if I will ever use it again since I purchased a Targus neoprene bag for $20.00, and I used it transport this printer. There is no need to accept the extremely low quality thermal print of the Planon Printstik when you can have near laser quality prints from this unit without much bulk.I also purchased a 3-Year Square Trade warranty plan. That's huge. The printer was shipped very fast. You can even use a highlighter without issue.
As soon as I opened it, I downloaded the driver from the HP site [since I had read reviews speaking of the nightmare of using the included driver cd]. The drivers loaded without a hitch. I hesitantly purchased this printer about 2 months ago [actually I paid $169.00] because I kept remembering the thought of inkjet prints smearing at the drop of a bead of sweat or water. I had previously purchased a Planon Printstik PS905 thermal printer. It is now officially a paperweight. It fits very snugly, and I am completely mobile. I do not have a need for color printing, so I will not comment on that.Right now, since I am absent any difficulties, I am completely satisfied, and I would recommend this printer to anyone who has a mobile need. So, I purchased some spare cartridges to make sure I am not left high and dry when I need it on the road.
Apparently, HP [which I have not like in 20 years] has developed the magic ink solution that prevents the smearing. I dread warranties, but I guess I'll have to write a review if, and when, I ever get there.Lastly, the price of the ink cartridges. The print speed was definitley not 18 pages per minute [more like 6-7 ppm - it may depend on the print mode], but the print quality was awesome, even for legal pleadings and important letters. I'm very satisfied. I would not ever recommend refills, but there are many, many folks selling OEM ink cartridges on the net for under $15.00 delivered [a real bargain compared to HP's $20+]. Hope it helps.Alan AlvarezMiami, Florida
But that is not the point of this review. A word to the wise: Never install printer cartridges until you know the printer will work. I couldn't. After several searches, I decided to try to make this printer copy. Ok, to be fair, I never could use this printer. Anyone want a slick looking printer but useless copier in a glossy case. The case is a very snug fit, but it does the job of protecting the unit. I got that, knowing I would be hauling the printer around in my car (if it worked), and it would need protection.
Also, don't open or use the case until you're sure you will keep the printer. For some reason they did not want to snap in as directed. I searched for a portable COPIER, and kept coming up with portable printers. The seller of my unit refuses to accept the printer because I have installed those stubborn little cartridges. The point is, it comes with two printer cartridges. It took me 20 minutes of determined effort to get them to seat properly and allow the cartridge hatch cover to close securely over them. And the optional case. Because I opened the case packaging, I can't return that either. Learn from my mistakes, anyway.
Can't get the bluetooth to work, primary reason why I spent over $300. Very disappointed. I bought this before Christmas 2009, now I'm stuck with this piece of crap.
I got it from local store for pretty good price and I used coupon to offset sales tax.I was a bit worried for some negative review, so far it works fine for me.I am not planning to use wifi option, but bluetooth is pretty handy (you can use ANY bluetooth USB adapter, I tested 7 different adapters and all worked). This is highly recommended to do alignment once to make clearest printout. This printer is also a great dedicated photo printer alternative, once having the printhead aligned, the photo looks pretty good, at least as good as some high end inkjet printers. both USB jacks (on the left and the back) can be used as pictbridge jack (only one can be used at a time). The memory card slot is next to useless because the printer doesn't have "screen" to choose which picture you can print; however, thanks to pictbridge and BT printing, you can select the pic on the phone or pda and print (use USB cable or send it through BT OBEX).The printer is a bit bulky to carry, but it's still decent for road warriors.
When I arrived at my destination it didn't work. Three weeks later, after business trip and no printer, more chat. I plugged it before I left on a trip. More time on chat. I don't really know if it is a good printer when it works. Spent almost an hour on chat with Tech assistance going through a useless protocol and then was told the ink cartridges were expired. I was told a new printer would be sent out immediately.
No call. It worked fine. I was told someone would call me within 24-48 hours. Bought new cartridges. Still didn't work. Returned printer and cartridges to Amazon. But if you can't get assistance from the manufacturer on a new product, best to go with another product.
